Bradford County, Florida, is a county with an area of about 293 square miles that is located in the northern half of the state. It has a population of roughly 28,000. It was formed in 1858 under the name of “New River,” and was renamed Bradford County in 1861 in honor of Richard Bradford, the first Florida officer to die in the Civil War. The county made Starke its county seat a city which is central to the area on Highway 301.

The county is home to a thriving agricultural community. Many areas of the county are perfect for raising animals and growing produce, and a number of community enriching organizations, such as the 4-H Youth Development program, thrive as a result.

There are several large portions of land in Bradford County that have been set aside as Wildlife Management areas and Swamp Conservation areas. These areas provide residents with the opportunity for hunting, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, and bicycling, many of which can be enjoyed year-round.

Many of Bradford County’s residence enjoy living on the banks of the area’s abundant lakes. Homes are dotted along the banks of the Santa Fe Lake as well Hampton Lake making for charming country living. The county is also located in a convenient place in the state with easy access to Gainesville and Jacksonville.

Bradford County is a perfect mixture of convenience, beauty, and a thriving industry. Although it is seemingly tucked away in the middle of Florida, its uniqueness makes it a great place to call home.
