About Kissimmee FL

The city of Kissimmee, Florida is located on the banks of Lake Tohopekaliga in central Florida. The city is just south of Orlando, making it conveniently close to the many theme parks in the area. Being in the center of the state, Kissimmee also has great access to all of the major highways that run through the state. Kissimmee is a wonderful place for families wishing to live close the excitement of Disney World, Sea World, and other theme parks, without living in the big city of Orlando.

The city was incorporated in 1883. There is no universal agreement as to the meaning of the name “Kissimmee”, but most experts agree that it is a Native American word. The area saw a great deal of growth after Hamilton Disston purchased the land for 25 cents an acre. Population continued to increase through the land boom of the 1920s, and the land was sustained by its citrus industry. Later the land saw additional growth with the building of Disney World in the 1970s.

Kissimmee has many great qualities that bring families to the area. Families have over 20 options for elementary schools ranging from public to private, as well as a range of excellence middle and high schools. Several of the high schools in the area feature the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, a prestigious program recognized by most universities in the world. The city also features many family-friendly parks and activities. The city is home to the 32-mile biking trail known as the Shingle Creek Regional Trail.

The city of Kissimmee is a wonderful place to live and work. With low prices for real estate, great schools, and easy access to all of the major highways, this city is a jewel in the middle of Florida.
