Volusia County is located on the eastern side of Florida northeast of Orlando. It has a population of around 500,000 and its county seat is DeLand on the western side of the county.
Volusia is so named because of an unincorporated community with the same name located near Lake George. No one knows for sure what the name means, although there are many theories as to its etymology. The county was established in 1854 about 13 years after the end of the Second Seminole War.
The county of Volusia sees many tourists every year. This is primarily because of the Daytona International Speedway which hosts the famous Daytona 500 every year. The county, with its firm, sandy beaches, has a long and rich history of racing along the shores, which eventually led to the construction of several other speedways such as the New Smyrna Speedway and Volusia Speedway Park. Uniquely, vehicles are still allowed to drive on many parts of the county’s beaches, provided they travel at a slow pace.
In addition to the county’s famous beaches, the area is also home to several state forests. Both the Lake George State Forest and the Tiger Bay State Forest stretch for several miles in between the county’s major roads and highways. Many other state parks and preserves are sprinkled throughout the area, making it a haven for wildlife.
Volusia County has a unique blend of small towns and fast-paced cities that bring diversity to living in this part of eastern Florida. It is a delightful county with many hidden surprises.
